Ribbon (2017) Review : Insightful take on modern relationships

Life is all about ups and downs. Different phases of life come with a package of various problems but dealing with all this is the name of a roller coaster ride called Life. ‘Ribbon’ showcases the various aspects of the life of a middle-class urban couple.

Ribbon is a mature and perceptive drama which majorly talks about an unplanned pregnancy. It is one of the most common situations that newly-married couples in big cities may have to deal with. Most of the women do not want to conceive as they think it can affect their career and health conditions. The film portrays the perspectives of both, the male and female lead, regarding this pregnancy.

Kalki Koechlin has played the role of Sahana Mehra who is an independent, hard-working and responsible lady, married to Karan Mehra (Sumeet Vyas) who works as a civil engineer. Both of them stay together happily until they find about this pregnancy. Sahana gets panicked as soon as she gets to know about it as she thinks her career would be destroyed if she would become a mother. After several deliberations, the couple decides to keep the child and in a few months, Sahana delivers a beautiful baby girl (Aashi Mehra).

The movie, then, focuses on the way the couple tries to cope up with their work while raising their child. The couple decides to hire a baby sitter for taking care of their baby when they leave for work but the plan doesn’t work as expected. Their different methods of raising the child make the movie quite interesting. The plot again takes a twist when Aashi grows up and starts going to school. The movie also focuses on the fact that the life of a woman changes when she becomes a mother. Sahana had to take leave from work for taking care of her baby but due to this she, at first, gets demoted and then gets fired from the company even after being one of the most loyal and hard-working employees in the past. Things change for Karan too after becoming a father. He faces financial problems and had to spend his life away from his family so as he could earn more and fulfil all the needs of the family.

The major thing that the film tells is whatever be the situation, one should always take care of his family and remain together and patient in every situation. The movie gets interesting minute by minute and is assured to keep the audience bound till the end. It is directed by a debutant director Rakhee Sandilya, but the story is not only beautifully portrayed but has been successful in delivering the appropriate message. Performances by the lead actors is noteworthy too. The actors have played their characters exceptionally well including the child artist. The movie seems quite relatable because of the strong and powerful performances of the artists. Everyone has given stupendous performances not only the lead actors but the side characters too.

Ribbon is available on hotstar. Its one the most underrated films of recent time and worth a try.
