‘Supernatural’ : Saving People, Hunting Things – The Family Business

For over 13 years, Supernatural has been a part of peoples’ lives. With the commencement of the 15th season, the journey continues to be as exciting and adventurous as ever. Supernatural is an American dark fantasy series created by Eric Kripke. The first episode aired on 15th September 2005 on the WB and subsequently became part of the CW. The lead actors of the show are Jensen Ackles as ‘Dean Winchester’ and Jared Padalecki as ‘Sam Winchester’.

After their mother dies in a mysterious fire, 22 years later, Dean, along with Sam, starts looking for their recently missing father. Dean’s famous line, “Dad’s been on a hunting trip, and he hasn’t been home in a few days” is probably a line which has been embedded in fans’ all across the world. Even I remember it thoroughly well, and I was 13 when I first saw Supernatural. When their father finds out that the fire was no accident, but if was caused by a yellow-eyed demon named Azazel, he sets out to find the monster and kill it, but unfortunately ends up making a deal with the same demon, which kills him.

The brothers now alone and without their mentor, decide to fight evil and kill all the supernatural creatures that are a harm to peoples’ lives. But little do, Sam, and Dean knows that the road ahead will not be easy. There are things that are even out of the brothers’ hands; the question is, will they be able to fight it? Both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have portrayed the roles of Dean and Sam tremendously. Jensen Ackles is known for his roles like Eric Brady in ‘Days of Our Lives’ as well as Jason Teague in ‘Smallville’. He also starred as the lead in the box office success ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’. Jared Padalecki rose to fame after appearing in television series ‘Gilmore Girls’ as well as films such as ‘New York Minute’ and ‘House of Wax’. Both the actors have given us Dean and Sam, who have a special place in our hearts.

Supernatural became a huge success not only because of the uniqueness of the supernatural creatures and the fantastic technical effects but also because of the relationship between Sam and Dean, the meaning of brotherhood and most importantly the value of family. The viewers of the show are so emotionally connected to it that it becomes difficult to leave even a single episode and especially if it’s a cliff-hanger episode. The show’s theme song, “Carry on My Wayward Son” is indeed an unforgettable song.

When I talk about Supernatural, it is not just the technical and dark fantasy aspects that attract me, the fact that no matter what family is the most important, the love that Sam and Dean share as brothers and the times when both of them can let loose and enjoy themselves – these are all the things that make this show so exciting and hard to keep my eyes off.
