“No live organism can continue to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality.” Steven
Horror – a genre very rarely explored in TV series and even more rarely done justice to! Based on a novel by Shirley Jackson, Netflix has managed to make a horror masterpiece that is sure to send chills down your spine and get you hooked to it in no time!
The Haunting of Hill House has a plot which on first glance seems simple. The Crains, a family of seven, consisting of a loving couple and their five children, have grown up in a haunted house, the memories of which still haunt them in their adulthood. Having lost their mother to suicide in the same house, the show starts with all the kids grown up, scattered across the country and leading their own lives. The story seamlessly swings between the past and the present timelines revealing the eerie happenings at the house and how differently it has affected each character. The emotions and personality of each character have been developed brilliantly. A noteworthy thing that a lot of the viewers don’t catch up on so easily is that each of the siblings represent 5 stages of grief starting from oldest to youngest.Steven, the oldest brother, is in constant denial about the house being haunted and thinks the whole family has some psychological disorder. Shirley is a control-freak who is always throwing anger at her siblings.
Theodora is sensitive and inquisitive and is always scouting for answers. Luke is a victim of substance abuse, suffering from addiction issues and depression. And lastly, Nell, the youngest sister, accepts the fact that the house did hold some dark secrets which have had a deep influence on their lives.Throughout the season, there are multiple mysteries that keep the viewer intrigued, so don’t be surprised if you end up binge-watching the whole season in one night (just like me haha)! The part I most liked about this show apart from its gripping story line is that it challenges the concepts of time, logic and explores an array of human emotions and experiences adding to the delight of watching it.
Coming to the scary bits of the show, there aren’t scenes that jump scare you, but the ghosts and the incidents give you just the perfect amount of creeps! There are a lot of references in the initial episodes that help you connect the dots in the final ones, so pay attention to little details all along.
In spite of it being a dark genre, the show takes you through all kinds of emotions and finally ends on a high note leaving you with a good and happy feeling. All in all, this Netflix show is definitely worth giving a watch and should be on your list if you love thrillers!
