Indians, by nature, can tolerate up to an extent and we usually can adjust to many situations. The movie negates these two sentences. There have been many attacks on India, but we have never been the first one to attack. But the movie says that this is the “New India”, which is not going to tolerate and will attack with full power.
The movie unfolds itself in chapters. The movie is about the Surgical Strike done on Pakistan basically POK because 4 terrorists which were suspected to be of Lashkar attacked one of the Indian Army Base in URI. The final chapter fills me with extreme ardor as it pays back those cowards for what they did. I’ll be talking about this in detail first let me introduce you with the cast.
In the first chapter, a bus full of Indian Soldiers were attacked while they were crossing a jungle. The soldiers were not expecting anything like this and all of them were killed in cold blood. The Indian Government has to do something about this, so they send their alpha team, based on their intelligence to a Launchpad where they could find about 70 terrorists at one place. The operation is headed by Major Vihan Shergill who is currently posted on Eastern Command. All the on-ground planning of the mission is done by him.
In the second chapter, all the soldiers are celebrating their victory and the Prime Minister congratulates each one of them. In the celebration, PM learns that Vihan has put up an application for premature retirement as his mother is suffering from Alzheimer’s stage 6. PM offers a transfer to Delhi so that he can work and take care of her mother as well. The PM also recruits a full-time nurse Jasmine Almeida, at Vihan’s place to take care of her mother.
In the third chapter, the movie revolves around Vihan’s personal life and his family. His mother’s Alzheimer’s are getting worse. Vihan feels different working a desk job from dusk till dawn and deep within still wants to be on the field after seeing his brother-in-law Major Karan. During this period, he encounters a girl named Seerat Kaur who is an Indian Airforce Agent. Vihan talks to her looking at her skills and finds out that she has an ongoing investigation on her. Vihan finds out that the nurse is actually a RAW agent Pallavi Sharma and askes her to leave. The Government did this because it keeps all the families of Special Forces Commandos under protection.
The fourth chapter is the URI attack when those 4 cowards entered the Army base early morning when all the soldiers were sleeping and killed many of them callously. Karan along with the others fought the terrorists. Karan went after one of them and wanted to go so close that he could shoot him with his pistol. He succeeds but when he takes the gun from the terrorist’s hand, it took off the pin of a hand grenade which blows Karan off. At Karan’s funeral, his 8-year-old daughter calls out the war cry which he taught her.
The finale is all about the biggest surgical strike in POK, a reprisal attack which was going to take down 8 launchpads based on Raw’s Intelligence. Vihan asks permission from General Arjun to lead this mission. Vihan then selects a team of 80 commandos not all from the Special Forces but from all those regions who lost their brothers in the URI attack. He wants to channel their anger and give them a chance to avenge the deaths of their fellow soldiers. This way Vihan puts exasperated soldiers to the right work. 4 teams of 20 each head towards their targets in helicopters. The teams were guided by drones. They execute each and every terrorist hiding there. Vihan took down who was behind the planning and handling of the URI attack and brings all the soldiers back “alive”. This was one of the greatest achievements of this mission.
URI is produced by Ronnie Screwvala and directed by Aditya Dhar which is his debut. Vicky Kaushal went through military training to gain weight and guns training at a Naval Base in Mumbai. He also got injured during the filming. Most of the movie scenes were shot at Serbia, some in Mumbai.
The film had an initial budget of ₹45 crore and made a profit of over ₹270 crore in the box office. Its ratings correspond the acting and the action. It has 9.1 IMDB and 70% on Rotten Tomatoes. The soldiers give up their lives for the betterment of our tomorrow. No one can repay them for the sacrifices they have made for our country. The Surgical Strike was a gesture to salute all those who lost their lives in the attack. The movie portrays how soldiers fight with fire in their eyes and passion in their hearts.
