50 Shades of Grey: It Will Never Be The Same Again

We have all heard of Erotica as a genre and everyone had their own share of guilty pleasures watching or reading it. Books like ‘Kamasutra’ and ‘Ratirahasya’ which are considered some of the oldest and mature works of erotica belongs to India. Still in our families, channels are switched  if there is an intimate scene or it gets really awkward and you start pretending like such things does not exist. We never really ‘talk’ about sex and our culture kept neglecting it because babies are found in garbage cans or local temples and sometimes they magically pop in, isn’t it? As a great man once said ‘ Magic is just science we don’t understand’ but in India sex is not magic but almost a taboo like many other things. And between everything we  never really got a chance to understand and appreciate erotic as a genre.

Similar is the scenario with 50 shades of grey. The movie is trilogy which was released in 2014. The movie series is based on a novel trio of 50 shades of grey, 50 shades darker and 50 shades free by E.L James. The story is not just another any porn film but there is a delicate blend of psych thriller, drama and a very beautiful romance. The story is about a young literature student Anastasia Steele, have to interview’s Christian Grey a business tycoon as her roommate fell sick. Christian grey is a billionaire and sadist with a troubling past and with serious commitment issues. The interview with him not only makes the butterflies in her stomach go wild but also creates a tension, something she never felt before.  As she tried to get him out of her head she stumbles into him again and again till she realizes she is already into him. She eventually gives in and explores her desires, fantasy and world of dark relationships with Christian. Now she is left to choose between her love for Christian with all his flaws and strings attached relationships or chose a normal life without him.The movie wasn’t received well by critics and banned in many countries as well. But audience had different thoughts . Honestly I was little disappointed with the movie E.L James in the book tries to establish not only sexual tension but emotional inter-dependency which the movie had literally destroyed. The novel have an overload of emotions which clearly the movie lacked. The movie is made less on Romantic erotica and more on phonography which most of the people find hard to distinguish. Though the first part was very disappointing the other two were comparatively better.

If you understand it well enough it have electrifying charisma and flow of emotions. There are places where you can actually feel the connections. During the adaptation they have discarded some really good scenes which have costed them to change the plot which really just adds to the destruction. Some scenes such as flashbacks from Christian’s past life are the lifeline of the movie. The movie is food for your guilty pleasures and escape from reality. There is a really good play of lights in the movie. Also the songs in the movie are something you cannot miss. They have manage to carry the passion and intensity throughout the movie. The movie wasn’t released in India and had faced many ethical criticism. There were many claims on the movie about unreal sex standards, supporting patriarchy etc. But if you are thinking why it was banned in India? The reason are lot different. The audience is yet not ready (with isn’t arguable at all) or it may hurt religious sentiments (you know how emotional they are). Not only it might increase the rape cases but also sexual violence on women in the name of pleasure and as the movie comes with no warnings signs and instructions people might just stop hearing the word ‘NO’ as well.

Tell me what you are your thoughts about the movie in the comment section down below . Hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading.
